fanno picture14 KOREAN FAN.
A KOREAN LACQUERED FAN WITH THREE-PART YIN-YANG DESIGN.
[Korea n.d. ca 1900]. A Korean three-color fan, red, green, orange, with black lacquered handle, 23 x 22 cm., clear lacquered for strength, very good. Made from utilizing very thin bamboo struts, sandwiched between two sheets of thin paper, with thin black border on the edges. The handle is designed like a Buddhist Mandala, with an orange outline painted around it, and a square portion just under this to add strength of an extra sheet of paper on both sides. The handle is fastened to the fan by use of two iron rivets with flower-blossom like aluminum round pieces. The handle is 16 cm. long. This is in very good condition, with a few small nicks to the edges, but solid, tight and very attractive. A color scan can be sent by e-mail. Fans of this period & design seldom survive as they were actually used during the hot sultry summer time.

fanno pictureA CHARMING GROUP OF EARLY JAPANESE FANS[KUNISADA, Tsunoda.] A GROUP OF THREE PERIOD JAPANESE FANS MADE FROM ORIGINAL
COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINTS FROM THE 1830-40’S.
[Japan n.d. ca. 1830-40]. A group of three uniform fans, 23x 22 cm., very good, minor small mended tears, made from a round bamboo stick, split at the fan end into very tiny struts, sandwiched between two paper sheets [one the print] and reinforced by a circular heavier bamboo piece through a hole in the handle then stitched with cloth, to hold it all fast. A true folk work of ingenuity and practicality. Very light & efficient for fanning during the long, hot sultry Japanese summers. Each fan is nicely done, utilizing an actual period color woodcut print. The first shows an elaborately clothed man, with a Samurai sword in his Obi, carrying a young girl on his back, with lovely floral background, pastel vegetal colors. Second is of a young man in a very decorative Kimono playing a lacquered flute, again in soft, vegetal colors. The third is from a Kabuki scene, shows elaborate Kimono clad couple: a man holding a long fan, the woman with fancy headdress, done in aniline dyes, strong in navy blue, red, with some gauffrage visible on inner Kimono garments. Nicely done with versos blank, white paper. Each piece is a miniature work of art and a fine example of the complicated Japanese woodblock printing process. Each print required one block per color or 20-30 per each print. Color scans can be sent by e-mail. QUITE SCARCE !
