SUNG DYNASTY FAN PAINTINGS.
[Shanghai 1915]. A loose portfolio, decorated boards, two bone clasps on red string, Chinese text, titles, consist of 10 b.w. plates of Chinese fan paintings, very good, 34 x 24 cm., very good, odd volume, but complete in itself.  This work illustrates a circular & folding fan shaped fans. Depicting flowers; garden portraits of Chinese beauties; scholar and his keepers in nature; a beautiful woman deity floating; sprig of flowers; traditional landscape, a beauty playing her lute, calligraphies, complete with title sheet. Delicately painted, finely executed. A nice item.

This excellent work covers the activities of artisans & craftsmen who are hat matkers, miror polisher, carpenter, blacksmith, armorer, spinner, hair dressing cord maker, paper maker, sword-guard & quiver maker basket, ball, fan, harp, mask, brush, potter makers, mat sewer, turner, paper hanger, card, umbrella, mortar, needle, ink-slab makers. A NICE COLLECTION OF SUPERB & EARLY IMAGES OF JAPAN

[KUSAKABE, Kimbei.] GRASS COVERED HAND-COLORED ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM.
[Japan n.d. ca. 1880, Kusakabe]. An oblong grass covered album, 32 x 23.5 cm., contains 50 8 x 10 inches, 26 x 20 cm. very good, bright clear images, no fading, most with English title & number in lower corner, scarce, superb images. RARE The images are: inside front cover tipped in without caption shows a lovely lotus pond with stone bridge and a small tea room & wooden Torii gate. CASTLE, TOKYO: this shows the famous Niju Bashi [Double Bridge] just at the entrance to the Imperial grounds. 748 GARDEN AT TOKYO: vertical image, shows two Japanese girls in Kimono and elaborate coiffeur, standing in a typical Japanese garden, with large stone lantern and pine trees, a third young girl in the background. The Kimono are beautifully hand-colored. 80 VISITING CEREMONY: this shows two Japanese girls in elaborate Kimono and coiffeur on the Tatami mats, bowing down in a greeting to a Japanese man who wears a formal Kimono and Hakama with a fan before him. They are in a very beautiful & typical Japanese room, with mats, Shoji sliding doors & Kakejiku hanging scroll in the background. 73 PLAYING KONKONCHIKI GAME: an unususual image showing 8 Japanese girls in elaborate Kimono & coiffeur plaing a game wherein they knot an Obi belt over a tea cup. They all sit on their folded legs in usual Japanese style, the central girl plays the Shamisen & is seated befroe a nice lac-quered miniature screen, a nice folding screen is at the rear. 230 FUNERAL: this shows a street procession of flower bearers in white with Buddhist caps, an elaborately decorated coffin is borne on the shoulders of a large group of mourners, some in white, others in formal Western top hat and tails, with on lookers observing. They walk down a wide street, with typical Japanese tile roof buildings, a bit of minor foxing, image clear. 1146 FUJIYAMA FROM TAGONOURA: shows a cloud covered Mt. Fuji before a lake with islands and a small Japanese junk-type sail boat. A classic view of Japan’s most sacred symbol. B49 Shows a mountain village in a heavy wooded forest. Ilustrating a large number of two or three storied typical wooden Japanese homes in a picturesque setting. 1563 BELL NIKKO: This shows a Shinto shrine with an elaborate roof and a great bronze bell inside, with a log suspened by chains for ringing, the whole is set upon large stones with steps. 1615 YASHAMON NIKKO shows the famous red gate before the temple with great and fierce guardians on each side, elaborately tiled highly decorated, with three Japanese in Kimono standing before the gate, one appears to be a Buddhist or Shinto priest. 1616 INSIDE IIYEYASU TEMPLE NIKKO: illustrates the highly decorated interior of the Shogun’s temple, with beautiful painted panels, drum, brass gong & other musical instruments used to summon the Gods when praying, gilt ceiling, Tatami mats, paintings of each of the Shoguns adorn the inner walls. 443 YOMEIMON GREAT GATE, NIKKO: shows a different view [possibly from the inside] of the most elaborate and fancy gate, with two lions or Fu-dogs on each side, tile roof, gilt decorations, bit of minor fading. 629 SPECTACLES BRIDGE OTANI, KYOTO: the famous stone bridge before a lotus flower pond with its double circular openings, nice piece of architecture. Uncaptioned, shows a collossal Buddha, within a temple, likely Todaiji, Kyoto or Nara. There is a Japanese man in a Kimono seated on the Buddha’s right knee, dwarfed in size when compared to the Buddha, which must be nine times larger than a man. Large lotus flowers decorate each side and the altar just below with grand censors, very impressive image! 76 TENNOJI OSAKA: the great temple with its impressive architecture, elaborate double tiled roof, gilt decorations. 802 MONKEY BRIDGE AT KOSHI shows the deep gorge with steep cliffs and the small bridge spanning the gap, lush green foliage over the large rock cliffs. A98 FESTIVAL CAR the Mikoshi shrine being drawn down the street by a large number of Japanese men in Yukata or summer Kimono, celebrating a summer festival. A373 KAMENOIKE [POND] TENNOJI AT OSAKA shows a part of the temple and the bridge over the water. 266 HORIKIRI TOKYO shows the famous and most beautiful iris garden & tea houses. 102 TONOMINE NARA the fabulous 13 roof pagoda. 989 VIEW OF KIGA ROAD shows the winding mountain road over a river, with a Japanese coolie leading a horse-drawn ladened wagon. 978 MIYANOSHITA & DOGASHIMA mountain resort, in wooded forest, with the island in far background. 93 OGIGOKU ON GREAT BOILING SPRING the volcanic area emitting steam, with 3 coolies pondering the site, one holds a pole over his shoulder with two items suspened wearing a straw hat. 1000 HAKONE LAKE nice view of a stone Torii gate, several summer Yukata-clad pilgrims sauntering about, large stone lantern before a river with many Japanese houses nestled. 893 FUJI YAMA FROM KISHIKU VILLAGE NEAR GOTENBA wonderful view of Japan’s sacred snow-capped mountain, with a farmer and his rustic house & field in the foreground. Last view is without caption, smaller format 23.5 x 14.5 cm., shows a rustic wood bridge spanning a creek, with a fisherman seated on the bank another person stands in a small boat tied to the bridge and several other people stand on the bridge 5 of which watch the cameraman with bewilderment, small village homes in the background. A good number of these numbered images are listed in T. Bennett: EARLY JAPANESE IMAGES. With good biographical notes on Kusakabe [1841-1934], p.50-51, who operated his photo studio in Yokohama was popular with foreigners, was an apprentice to the most celebrated Beato or Stillfried working initially as a photo colorest for them, in 1877 he took over Beato’s studio. He operated his own studio from 1881 on Bentendori. In 1885 he acquired a number of Beato & Stillfried negatives which were reprinted and found in his albums.
